The Hudson Valley is a GREAT Choice!
With so much information on the Hudson Valley, figuring out how to find the best place to call home can be a major issue. The advice I give to clients is to partner with one real estate agent that knows how to guide and allows you to make those decisions. Clients tell me that they are overwhelmed. Frequently I receive calls from potential buyers currently living in Brooklyn, the Bronx and other more distant corners of New York State and beyond. A good number of my phone calls, emails and even text messages inquire about living in The Hudson Valley.
Many people from NYC and out of state are looking to leave their current location and move to The Hudson Valley. Picturesque and affordable, our way of life outside of New York City has become most appealing! There are so many great places to live, but with so many places to choose from there needs to be some sort of organized process. Where should you begin? I recommend that my clients start by sorting out what you don’t want.
The hardest part is knowing the right questions to ask and what research you will need to do. Looking for the location that best suits your needs, budget and style is all part of the home buying process. Why is that so difficult? A perfect fit can mean different things to different buyers. Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester County covers quite a bit of territory, and a few thousand homes. Up and down the Hudson River there are many villages and towns, hamlets and cities with varied communities. If you search online then you can’t get a real feel for these locations. Spend some time looking around the area and see what looks like home. Narrow down what you don’t like and your options and decisions will be easier.
When I help clients search for a new home, the first question is location. In order to direct that search I filter things such as transportation, where you work and any special wants or needs for school districts. Once I have an idea of the location, then we can move forward with price. style and details.
As a consumer setting your priorities is a balancing act. The closer to NYC the more expensive a home will be. The length of a commute can be a huge concern, as prices of homes may increase based on distance to NYC. The size of the home and land may decrease in some neighborhoods as your ease of commuting changes. The size of the property will most likely change from a home with 5 acres and a backyard barn, to a property that has .25 acres.
A closer commute might be preferred but you may not find the privacy and acreage you expected moving north. Choices at every turn. As your local real estate agent, my job is to help guide you along to find a home that can meet your needs and fit your budget. Together we can weigh the options available and find you a place to call home.
