A Brief History of Eastchester, NY
Ten families originally settled in Eastchester in 1664 and were joined by over two dozen families shortly thereafter. Unlike the landscape of today, the area was farm lands and with homes of various sizes, and many on large parcels of land. New York City being less than 25 miles away was considered far away at that time and not an easy journey. The Big Apple, was not a place that the locals frequented. As transportation venues changed access to Manhattan became well traveled as well as the look of the town.
After many changes and challenges of ownership over the years, the land of Eastchester is just five square miles. At the last count just over 32,000 people call Eastchester home. A good number of the current residents commute into NYC as it is quite a short distance from home. Landowners subdivided their parcels into many lots, with a much more densely populated area the end result.
There are many landmarks and attractions in Eastchester NY. Two are found on The National Register of Historic Places. Both of these are well known schools: The Marble Schoolhouse and The Tuckahoe High School. The Marble Schoolhouse was built from in 1835. The Tuckahoe Marble is a high quality marble, and first discovered in Eastchester, New York. Not all quality marble comes from Europe.

Even though we are in a urban setting GREEN is still a favorite color when it comes to the local community. The Nature Preserve features a butterfly garden and a bird sanctuary. This is a peaceful place to stroll around, while enjoying nature and the quiet. Many students use the preserve to study nature and science. Photo opportunities are rampant when it comes to the preserve. A click of the camera (or smart phone) and the memory lingers on forever. Other locations of interest are the Lake Isle Country Club and Twin Lakes Country Park. Trees, birds, flowers and parks are found here. The Leewood Country Club remains open to this day, and boasts it’s most famous member – Babe Ruth.
The Tuckahoe Community Center has many activities for people of all ages and encourages community involvement in many areas around the town. The Recreation Department has art and sports activities for children of toddler age through teenage years. All are welcome and these events are routinely well attended.
