There is something about Westchester County, NY, that stirs the imagination and makes you sit up and say, “WOW!” From the battle of White Plains to the headless horseman’s imaginary ride through the streets of Sleepy Hollow, the county is rich in history, lore and just a little bit of magic. Today’s Westchester borders The Bronx to its South and Putnam County to its North. East and West the county is flanked by two significant bodies of water, the Hudson River to the West and Long Island Sound to the East. The county also borders the State of Connecticut.
By the way, when we said Westchester has a rich history we meant it literally as well as figuratively. As early as 1775, Westchester was the richest and most populated county in the colony of New York. It has never lost its rank as one of New York’s richest counties. Today, Westchester County is home to just under one million inhabitants. Second only to Manhattan, it has the highest number of million- dollar-a-year wage earners in New York State.

Westchester is the closest suburban county North of New York City. But don’t worry, it has one of the most complete and efficient transportation systems in the country. Within its borders is America’s first highway, the old Boston Post Road, which runs from Manhattan through the Bronx into Westchester continuing into New England. As a vital link between New York and Boston, the road sparked the development of towns along Long Island Sound from New Rochelle to Larchmont to Port Chester.
Towns along the Hudson River shoreline grew early on due to river traffic. Along its banks you will find towns with bucolic names such as Hastings on Hudson, Tarrytown, Philips Manor, Sleepy Hollow, Croton on Hudson and Peekskill. Long before these towns became bedroom communities they were once home to manufacturing plants, shipping companies, and yes, even farms.
All aboard, there’s a train a-comin’
One of the first places in the nation to invite the Iron Horse into its backyards was Westchester County. In the 1840s, railroads connected Westchester to New York City. They included the New York and Harlem Railroad along the Hudson River and the New York and New Haven Railroad. You could say Westchester gave America its first commuters along with its first bedroom communities! Today, the Metro North Rail brings hundreds of thousands of Westchester residents to New York City’s Grand Central Station every day and then back to their suburban bedrooms every night.
Follow the yellow brick roads
The Westchester County of today was largely created due to the invention of the Horseless carriage. From the inception of the Bronx River Parkway in 1925, the county had a road linking White Plains to Yonkers and ultimately to New York City itself. In the 1970s when the Sprain Brook extension was added it helped link northern Westchester to its southern half. The Sprain also connected everyone to the New York State Thruway and the Tappan Zee Bridge which was completed in the 1950s and is now undergoing major reconstruction. This connection alone puts the rest of New York State within a day’s drive of the county. Apple picking, fishing, hiking, camping, boating, even hang gliding are all a simple drive away.
Hop a plane to anywhere, any time, any day
Westchester County is completely connected to the outside world, by car, train, bus and yes, airplane. Westchester County Airport with direct flights to many U.S. cities. Both commercial and corporate jet traffic are served by the airport making it a convenient alternative to New York’s three busiest airports. The Westchester Airport abbreviation code is known to the airline industry as HPN and most easily found on all the travel websites.
Not just a bedroom community, a cultural mecca as well
Presented with a full range of social and cultural activities activities there are many choices for those that enjoy a variety of experiences. On any given weekend you can hear top musicians play at the Tarrytown Music Hall, the Caramoor Center for Music and Arts in Katonah, The Capitol Theater in Port Chester or the Westchester County Center in White Plains. - Sunnyside in Tarrytown was home to one of America’s first literary lions, Washington Irving.
- Lyndhurst Castle in Tarrytown was once home to the renowned American architect A.J. Davis, former New York City major, William Paulding, merchant George Merritt and railroad tycoon Jay Gould. The Gothic revival mansion and its grounds are now open to the public.
- The Rockefeller estate called Kyuit, a hilltop retreat not only includes breathtaking views of the Hudson River from its grounds but also includes breathtaking works of art from the Rockefeller collection both in the house and around the grounds.
