Philipstown is located in the western part of Putnam County, New York. This town was purchased as part of a parcel back in 1697 by Adolphus Philipse. The parcel was divided in 1754 and Philipstown was established in 1788. It is only approximately 51 square miles in size and has miles of waterfront property along the Hudson River. Villages and Hamlets make up the town that is mainly comprised of the Village of Cold Spring, the Hamlet of Garrison and the Village of Nelsonville.
The area has two state parks, the Clarence Fahnestock State Park and the Hudson Highlands State Park. Clarence Fahnestock State Park has a nature trail, hiking and biking trails, beaches, campsites, areas for fishing and a boat launch. They also offer seasonal turkey and deer hunting. During the winter, the Fahnestock Winter Park comes to life. Weather permitting, the park is open from December to March and offers cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding and recreation programs, complete with rental equipment available. Hudson Highland State Park mainly used for hiking, boasting some majestic views of the Hudson River for those up to the climb. There are no campsites and no vehicles are allowed.
The local newsletter that is very informative can help with information on most anything around town. There are two libraries servicing the residents of Philipstown along with three school districts. When buying a home, it is important to know what district your home is in. Many people like to search for a home by school district. Easy to set up if you let me know. Once you begin the process it is always good to verify with the town that the boundaries for the districts have not changed prior to making any offers.
The Philipstown Depot Theatre is the big attraction in town. Enjoy an evening or matinee of local theater that has been around for quite some time. It is located in the Garrison Train Station and opened in November of 1996 as a community performing arts center. They offer theatre, children’s programs, poetry readings, music, cabaret, films plus many more events. Seriously, this is not to be missed!
Other places of interest include Boscobel, The Garrison Art Center, Stone Crop Gardens, The Manitoga, and The Russel Wright Design Center. The Cold Spring Farmer’s Market is a must visit on Saturdays for fresh produce. A fun way to spend an afternoon strolling around this quaint town.
A small town atmosphere with so many things to do makes Philipstown a much desired place to be. This long time sleepy bedroom community is getting more recognition all the time. A great commuter location with so many great amenities available continues to attract city folk. Those that enjoy the arts, the outdoors, or the beauty of the Hudson Valley will find a reason to visit and a reason to stay and make Philipstown their home. Many community happenings and new events make it easy to understand why people are moving to Philipstown NY.
