Brewster is a very small village in the heart of Putnam County, New York. The village was formed in 1849 and is named after two early landowners, Walter and James Brewster. A wise business man, Walter Brewster invited the New York and Harlem Railroad to build a railroad station on his property. This became known as Brewster’s Station and it is still a part of the railway system to this day. The village of Brewster is located within the Town of Southeast, and the locals prefer to call this entire area, Brewster as well.
The Walter Brewster House is on the National Registry of Historical Places. The house was built in Greek Revival Style back in 1850, is currently owned by the Landmarks Preservation Society of Southeast, and is used for special events and meetings. Greek Revival architecture is often seen in this part of the Hudson Valley and many of the historical places in the area show the affinity settlers had for bringing this familiar piece of style from Europe to our shores.
In spite of being a small village, Brewster boasts two museums within its boundaries. They are the Southeast Museum and the Antique Farm Equipment & Tractor Museum. The Southeast Museum was established in 1963 and has exhibits from all of Southeast history. The Antique Farm Equipment and Tractor Museum has a collection of farming equipment and tractors.
The students of Brewster attend school in the Brewster Central School District or one of the two private schools. The town library is the Brewster Public Library and they are committed to providing activities to everyone in the community that are well attended.
On Main Street, there is a locally owned grocery store that opened in 1957. The market is called Kobacker’s and is now run by the third generation. Every time you walk in the store, you are greeted with a warm welcome and friendly smile. Many of the residents of Brewster worked their first job at Kobacker’s as a teenager. This small community is home to many that are proud to share their work experience; almost a local tradition.
