New Windsor is located in the eastern part of Orange County, and covers an area of approximately 37 square miles. It is bordered by the Hudson River to the east, and the town Newburgh to the north and west; to the south lies the town of Cornwall.
Commuters enjoy easy access to surrounding areas and New York City. US Route 9W and New York State Route 32 pass North-South through New Windsor. It also has nearby access to NYS Thruway I-87 and I-84. For air travelers, Stewart International Airport (located partially in New Windsor and partially in neighboring Newburgh,) provides a delightfully convenient alternative to flying out of New York or Albany. Rail commuters take Metro North from Salisbury Mills or Beacon.

In 2013, New Windsor celebrates its 250th (“sestercentennial”) anniversary with a variety of events throughout the year. The town’s official history dates back to 1763, when the precinct of New Windsor separated from the Precinct of the Highlands (Ulster County) and became an independent township. The town’s name is a reference to Windsor, England, although the details of who conferred the name and why it was chosen have been lost.
New Windsor played an important role in the Revolutionary War, and visitors today can learn about local history at several historical sites. Knox’s Headquarters, where Major General Henry Knox served as Commander of the America artillery, is visited by many local schoolchildren each year; and adults enjoy the popular Christmas with the Ellisons annual event in this 1754 Georgian-style mansion. The New Windsor Cantonment is known as the Winter quarters of 7,500 colonial soldiers at the end of the Revolutionary War, and visitors come to see military firing demonstrations and holiday events. It is also the home of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, which honors servicemen and women who were killed or wounded in combat.
New Windsor students K-12 are served by three separate school districts, depending on their home address: Newburgh Enlarged City School District, Washingtonville Central School District, and Cornwall School District. This makes it extremely important for parents to verify which district their children will attend by contacting the district offices. Continuing students in New Windsor are served by SUNY Orange (aka Orange County Community College), with campuses in Newburgh and Middletown. There are also a variety of four-year universities in the area, including Mount Saint Mary College, a private, liberal arts institution in Newburgh NY; SUNY New Paltz, a public residential college; and Vassar College, a coeducational university located in Poughkeepsie.
