In addition to river front homes, this community of approximately 3,000 residents that enjoy various parts of the area. The communities within the borders of Cornwall and Cornwall on Hudson, include the hamlets of Firthcliffe, Meadowbrook, Orrs Mill, and Mountainville.
The town of Cornwall covers approximately 28.2 square miles, located just south of New Windsor. It is bordered to the south by the foothills of the Storm King Mountains, and by neighboring Washingtonville to the west. Cornwall is an excellent location for commuters. US Route 9W passes through the town, and NYS 32 intersects with its southwestern border. It is also mere minutes from access to the New York Thruway I-87. Rail commuters utilize the Cornwall-Salisbury Mills station along the NJ Transit line.
Cornwall’s terrain is hilly and diverse, with valleys, ridges, mountains, rolling farms, and estuarine salt marshes. Population is concentrated around the village and the Firthcliffe areas. Visitors to the area can enjoy a lovely vista point on the northeast ridge of Schunemunk Mountain, from which most of the town is visible.
Lifestyle
The heart of Cornwall is found in its Main Street area, located within the village. This bustling town center features many local shops, spas, yoga studios, restaurants, coffeehouses, and taverns. A local bandstand is used for many festivities during the year, and the residents enjoy the summer musical events that take place there. Throughout the year, fresh produce, cheeses, meats, and baked goods are available from local farms at the Cornwall Farmers Market every Wednesday and Sunday.
Nature lovers will be pleased to know that Cornwall is a designated Tree City, and in fact much of the modern environmental movement can be traced back to the town history. There are two protected spaces within the town boundaries, Storm King State Park and the Black Rock Forest, a privately owned consortium offering educational experiences for children and adults.
History
Cornwall was settled by English and Scottish immigrants in the late 1600s. Initially, the community was named “New Cornwall,” based on its notable similarity to the County of Cornwall in England. In 1799, the town name was changed to Cornwall. Historically, Cornwall was known as a summer resort town and health retreat, popular with tourists from New York City who believed its mountain air and green forests held therapeutic powers. Its natural beauty, river views, and convenience to New York that made it popular as a destination in the late 1800s are some of the very things that make Cornwall desirable to homeowners today.
Homes built in the area show the architecture of yesteryear. Further away from the center of the village are homes on large parcels of land varying in size and style, from more traditional to very modern. Some Cornwall residents have horses and stables on their property. The views on many of these homes are spectacular.
The historical value of Cornwall remains apparent today, with several houses, churches, and stores listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Education
Cornwall students are served by the Cornwall Central School District. The district employs 250 teachers to serve approximately 3,400 K-12 students, and includes three elementary schools (K-4), one middle school (5-8) and one high school (9-12). There are also several options for private education as well. Students from grades 7-12 alternatively attend the New York Military Academy, a co-educational school with both boarding and day-school options. The Storm King School serves 8-12th graders, also with options for boarding or day students. Its mountain location and unique educational philosophy draw now only locals, but national and international students as well.
Continuing students are served by the Orange County Community College district, also known as SUNY Orange, with campuses in nearby Newburgh and Middletown. Four-year universities in the surrounding area include the United States Military Academy at West Point, SUNY New Paltz, Marist College, Vassar College, and Mount St. Mary College.
