Would YOU Pass A Test??
From a young age, my girls always loved Thanksgiving. Whether it was “making the turkey dance” with their grandmother, or wearing American Indian costumes for dinner, they always made the Thanksgiving feast all the more celebratory.
In particular, my daughter, Kathleen, was always very precocious. When she was about eight years old, she began a tradition all her own. She would make up little Thanksgiving themed quizzes testing our knowledge of the age of the explorers, the pilgrims, and the Iroquois Indians. Have you ever seen that show, “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?” Well, it had been a while since we’d brushed up on our early American history.
Question: “What were the three staple foods, called the ‘three sisters’ that the Native Americans shared with Pilgrims?”
Answer: Corn, beans, and squash
I told you. She may have been 8, but they were hard.
Soon all of our holidays had quizzes to complete the meal. And my little girl schooled us all! She made it up to us with handmade prizes: lovingly sculpted pilgrims, Mayflowers, and pumpkins. This was a prize that I won eighteen years ago today.
Today at dinner we joked about all the old quizzes and how they made our holidays more interesting. My sister in law told me she was wondering on the drive to my house if there would be a quiz today. No quiz today just laughter.
Thanksgiving in my house has always been an adventure!….
