BASIC STAR EXEMPTION New York – How to File??
An old deadline has passed to extend this for residents in 2013 but now you just file again. New York State Property owners are able to get a discount on their school tax bill if used as their primary residence. If you did not complete the exemption back in 2013 now would be the time to refile for next year. Best check with your town and ask if the exemption is current. They won’t be calling you to let you know!!
The STAR Program still exists and if your exemption was canceled, you can refile. Be sure to read more on their website and file before March 1st this spring. Once you file, you won’t need to do this again every year. Make sure that you have this by calling your town tax office.
Go to the state website at www.tax.ny.gov and you can register there or call their phone number at (518) 457-2036. What will they be looking for?
- your social security number of all owners of the property (and their spouses)
- combined income to be lower than $500,000 of resident owners (and their spouses)
- Info about other state residency based exemptions
Seniors already receiving the Enhanced STAR were not affected and didn’t need to reapply.
You must register with the New York State Tax Department to receive the exemption from you school taxes. You can file a new application at your local town assessors office. Just give them a call and you will see what they need from you and the easiest way to get this done. All new homeowners should file this as soon as they transfer title as not to forget.
