Located on the old Concord Hotel site, the new developers, Empire Resorts, plan to build an $800 million resort with a casino, 18-story hotel with 391 rooms, indoor-outdoor water park, conference center, cabins and hiking trails. They are expected to finalize paper work and begin construction quickly. This is no small project. Monticello is on the path to success!
Monticello – A Great Place to Live
Monticello, NY is the largest village in the county, and located in Thompson NY. Almost half of Thompson NY residents live in Monticello, at just under 7,000 people. Monticello is not only the seat to the Town of Thompson, but the county seat for Sullivan County as well. Currently home to the Monticello Casino and Raceway, and the less known Monticello Motor Club. More often Monticello has been know as “the Gateway to the Catskills.”
Monticello is a small village that was originally designed by John and Samuel Jones. Two brothers working together in the early 1800’s busy determining where to put a new local highway for the state. They were sent out to find a way to connect the Hudson River with the Delaware. A need for transportation to the mountains for lumber they found the perfect location to begin construction. They had vision for the area and knew their plans were logical and that the road would foster growth. Fans of Thomas Jefferson, the brothers named the village Monticello, translated from Latin, “heavenly mountain”, making reference to the former Presidents home in Charlottesville, VA.
Location and Geography
Monticello is located in the southern portion of of Upstate NY, and part of the Catskill Mountains in Sullivan County. A small community of under 7,000 people measuring approximately 4.1 square miles of land. Adjacent to route 17 Monticello is 45 miles from Newburgh NY, 90 miles from New York City, and 100 miles SW of Albany NY by car.
A sleepy town compared to its old lifestyle of tourist dominated abode, Monticello has undergone some major changes over the years. Being the Gateway to the Catskills has had enormous impact on the success and failure of the economics of this village. In the past it had been home to some of the largest and most grand resorts in the county. From the 1920’s until the early 70’s many families would leave NYC to spend time in the summer at beautiful Catskills resorts. During those years the rich and famous traveled far and wide to either perform or spend a summer in the mountain. Gone is the heyday of travel to the county as it was. The mountains remain beautiful and the location is home to many that still enjoy country living. Today those that live there are long time residents that work and play in the area. Luxury and second homes are part of the landscape. Being a short ride to NYC it remains a place to “getaway” for some with seasonal occupancy. Pricing varies but all come complete with mountain and lake views that are “heavenly”. Buying a Home in Monticello NY or the surrounding areas provide many opportunities.
