Newburgh New York Native at the Olympics 2012
Triple Jump Finals…..
Congratulations to Samyr! The 2012 Olympic event in London is now over and the results are in. Samyr landed a 16.65 jump and placed 11th in the world!
After receiving a call yesterday from the Haitian President and a televised shout-out from the Haitian Prime Minister, Samyr went on to meet the challenge of a lifetime. The President and Prime Minister extended their best wishes, and told Samyr how proud and thankful the country of Haiti is to be shown in such a positive light. What an honor to receive this phone call hours before the competition. Seems to me that Samyr has quite the fan club, and not just the heads of state!
If you visit Samyr’s fan page on Facebook you can see that he has enormous support from his family, friends and community. Look at the number of subscribers he has!! Ever since my first blog about Samyr going to the Olympics I have been meeting local people that know both Samyr and his family. I can’t begin to tell you how many fans this entire family has. Everyone I have talked to is so excited for the Laine family. Amazing to see people talk about them and their eyes light up. To me, that is a sign of respect and admiration.
While I’m sure this is a bittersweet moment for Samyr, I hope he and his family know how much his Olympic journey has touched our community in the Hudson Valley and around the world. He has graced the front page of the Haitian newspapers, and brought an amazingly resilient country great pride. More than that, Samyr is so incredibly generous and intelligent, I know that we all can expect great things from him very soon. No doubt about it Samyr is a winner in so many ways.
Thank you Samyr, for sharing your journey with all of us. The Olympics can be a truly magical time, and your participation allowed us all to travel to London vicariously and hope and dream and leap with you. You are an inspiration, and I for one can’t wait to see what your future has in store!
